Why Big Qual Analysis?

What is Big Qual Data?

• With Big Data (e.g. social media, medical data, large qualitative survey/audit datasets) - dataset size, while helpful in many ways, does not guarantee either relevance or enhanced understanding.
  

• Reliance on purely quantitative analysis of social media or large qualitative datasets
  - with a lack of any strong theoretical understanding of causal relationships between human behaviour and real-life outcomes is problematic;
  

• Indeed, in many cases, the often uncontrolled and haphazard manner in which big data are acquired requires new approaches to their analysis.
  

• Because of the size of the datasets, there is a strong need for quantitative and qualitative researchers to work jointly.
